What you see in the pics is exactly what you will receive. Last week, it was announced that Flacco sustained a potentially serious back injury while lifting weights , and coach John Harbaugh said the QB would miss at least the first week of camp.
For athletes, especially football players, few health issues cause as many short- and long-term complications as back injuries. While once-crippling conditions such as a torn ACL rarely derail careers -- in recent years, Rob Gronkowski, Jordy Nelson and Adrian Peterson have each returned from a torn ACL to produce Pro Bowl campaigns the following season -- the back remains somewhat of a blind spot for sports medicine. Back trouble generally tends to grow worse for players that incur it, not better.
Watt serves as a prominent example. Perhaps no defender in NFL history enjoyed a more successful four-year run than Watt's seasons, a stretch that saw the defensive lineman register tackles, 69 sacks, 41 pass breakups, 15 forced fumbles, four first-team All-Pro selections and three Defensive Player of the Year awards.
However, Watt underwent surgery for a herniated disc heading into , forcing him to miss all of Houston Texans training camp and the preseason. He returned for Week 1, but soon reinjured his back and landed on season-ending injured reserve. Watt will try to reclaim his form again this year, but history strongly suggests we have already seen his best days as a football player. Back injuries can affect quarterbacks as significantly as linemen. Tony Romo suffered his first major back injury in , a ruptured disk that kept him on the sidelines for the Dallas Cowboys' winner-takes-all showdown with the Philadelphia Eagles in Week That injury opened the floodgates, causing Romo to sustain multiple major back issues two transverse fractures in , a compression fracture of the L1 vertebra in that ultimately closed the book on his career.
Likewise, at age 32, Flacco's future appears clouded by his own back trouble. Even at 50 fewer pounds than Watt and one year younger than Romo when they incurred their first back injuries, Flacco and his stretched-out 6-foot-6 frame remain highly vulnerable to repeated back injuries. Quarterbacks have to contort their bodies numerous times each possession to evade the pass rush and generate enough torque to drive the football down the field.
Moderate back soreness can severely interrupt those mechanics, let alone a multi-week back injury such as Flacco's. And while various timetables for Flacco's return have surfaced, recovery from back injuries rarely follows a predictable path.
Setbacks can arise in rehab, but they can also spring up during sleep, sitting and any number of normal daily occurrences.
Those factors partly explain the great disparity in Flacco's return date. The Baltimore Sun suggested Flacco might return in as little as a week. On the other side of the spectrum, NFL Network reported the disc issue could sideline the quarterback for as many as six weeks.
At present, the Ravens have no viable backup plan to Flacco. The top reserve quarterback on the roster, journeyman Ryan Mallett, has a career completion rate of just 55 percent, a figure made even more frightening by his woeful mark of 5. Behind Mallett, the team employs Dustin Vaughan a former undrafted free agent with zero regular-season passes to his name and David Olson signed on July 28 out of arena football. If any find their way under center for an extended period of time this season, Baltimore will find itself competing for the top draft pick, not a playoff spot.
On some level, the Ravens recognize the problem. While talking about Flacco's injury, Harbaugh said that the team has contacted free-agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick. And, on Sunday, Ravens president Dick Cass confirmed the team has seriously considered Kaepernick as an option. Ravens president Dick Cass said team has had direct discussions with Colin Kaepernick. Says Colin wants to play. While such a move makes plenty of sense for Baltimore, the fact that Harbaugh brought his name up underscores the potential seriousness of Flacco's condition.

Even the Green Bay Packers severed ties with Brett Favre when his yearly dance with retirement and the development of Aaron Rodgers made him expendable. Lamar Jackson set to become youngest QB to start in playoffs The fact Jackson will be the first QB to start a playoff game before his 22nd birthday has seemed to impress everyone except the rookie himself.
